Good4Tune | Good4Tune (2009)

Timeless yet worn-out Broadway classics are given a spirited makeover on Eye on the Prize by the musicians who piece together Good4Tune. Young, attractive and well-dressed, Good4Tune seems to be marketed for live performance; it's not just a studio project. Similarly, Eye on the Prize can be viewed as the band's calling card.

As far as commercial gimmicks go, Good4Tune is packaged nicely, and its affection for the material is undeniable. The artistic pulse of the group is keenly felt. This isn't some shallow money-making enterprise, although it is making an effort into playing corporate functions.

Noel Coward and Cole Porter's "I'm Throwing a Ball Tonight" is delivered with the right amount of vocal spunk, further energized by Ilana Ringwald's lively electric violin. Her violin is Good4Tune's lethal weapon, altering the original flavor of the songs and giving them a sense of the new. "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is a stirring cover, as Ringwald's swooping instrument thickens the tension in the air, and her strings are hauntingly pretty on "C'est Magnifique/But Beautiful."

The chemistry between singers Rebekah Turner and Nathan Colby can be quite playful, especially on Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek," where their vocals seamlessly blend into each other. Their interplay has its mesmerizing moments too, on another Berlin staple, "Steppin' Out with My Baby." Turner's voice reaches chilling operatic tones on "Here's That Rainy Day," while Colby keeps it cool and soulful.

While the entertainment value of Eye on the Prize is high, Good4Tune is probably at its best caught live, where they can be appreciated visually as well.
